Through our online course format, you can continue your work helping others while you earn your graduate public administration degree.
This program is also an excellent option for legal studies, human services, emergency management and homeland security, and criminal justice undergraduate degree holders to fulfill their potential in their field.
Emergency Management and Homeland Security Concentration
The Emergency Management and Homeland Security concentration for the online MPA program of study addresses the policy, planning, security, organizational, and management decisions involved in emergency preparedness by using and evaluating analytical data to assess hazards and threats. Students will gain an understanding of how emergency management and security has changed since 9/11 … examine related cybersecurity issues … and analyze how agencies and organizations work together to save lives, protect property and defend our nation.
Graduates of this concentration learn how to prepare and lead response plans in times of emergency, providing relevant opportunities for career entry or advancement at federal, state and local levels of government. Career opportunities include titles like Emergency Management Specialist and Preparedness Specialist.
Our online program includes a unique combination of graduate-level public administration and business courses that enhance your executive administration skills, which can be applied to your current organization right away or transferred to an advanced position in higher education, health care administration and traditional public serving organizations. Through practical coursework, you will learn to:
- Analyze public policy formulation, interactions, implications and avenues of impact
- Demonstrate ethical leadership and management skills
- Apply principles of finance to public and nonprofit operations
- Identify, analyze, evaluate and implement research-based public administration practices
- Formulate and implement new or expanded government/nonprofit services and programs, and consolidate/eliminate underperforming or obsolete programs and services
Your online MPA studies will conclude with a capstone project, which is a research and data based applied policy plan to be completed over the duration of Capstone Part I and Capstone Part II. In Capstone I, students begin the background research necessary for their Implementation Plan, and Capstone II continues the project through to completion, presentation, and defense. The written portion of a successful policy plan will include, at a minimum, an executive summary, introduction, policy overview and background, plan of implementation, financial plan, plan of evaluation, and a conclusion.
